Care & Cleaning Windows

Picture 049

It’s harder than I thought to write a blog entry every week!  It’s not that I don’t have anything to write about – I just don’t seem to have the time!  So I’m trying to get back on track with this week’s entry about the care & cleaning of your new vinyl windows.  Penn Windows, Doors & Siding sends out the letter attached to all window and patio door customers a few weeks before installation.  It’s important to understand that your new vinyl windows WILL require some maintenance.  There’s not a whole lot to do, but (as I ranted about in a previous blog entry) nothing is maintenance free.  The letter we send goes over how to operate your windows, tilt them in for cleaning, and even has a recipe for cleaning solution. Payment upon Installation

payment

I know asking for money, even money that is owed to you, is a touchy subject. I know I had a lot of difficulty calling customers for final payment when I first started working for my father back in 2000. It’s uncomfortable. But the fact of the matter is – if you sign a contract for products and installation – you need to pay your final balance upon installation. When you sign the contract, you’re agreeing to the terms of that contract.

Weather Cancellations

One of the most difficult customer service issues facing any home improvement company is weather delays. Rain, snow, ice, high winds, even excessive heat or cold can make a project dangerous for our installers and compromise the customer’s home’s interior. Customer and installer safety, as well as installation quality, dictate that we install only in fair weather. For example, we can install in a light drizzle, but not in pouring rain. We can install in the winter, but not if it’s below 10 degrees. We realize this can be extremely inconvenient for our customers, but we must maintain a safe workplace and protect our installers and customers’ property.

Nothing is Maintenance FREE

Warranties

I got a call today from a customer who had purchased a steel door in 2002 and wanted to know what he should do about the door finish fading. The door has been installed now for over 9 years, so my answer was to contact a paint professional for information on preparing and painting a steel door. He was shocked, and asked me why the fading paint was not covered under his lifetime warranty. I explained that his particular door has a 5 year finish (paint or stain) warranty, and that since we are past that period, he was to maintain the door as necessary from this point forward. I explained that no door on the market today stays looking brand new with absolutely no maintenance and asked if he had been waxing his door yearly as suggested by the manufacturer. He had not, but insisted his door was “No maintenance.” Ladies and gentleman . . . there is no such thing as a “maintenance FREE” product.

Doors – What’s the Difference?

New doors in Allentown PA

Recently, a neighbor of mine replaced their front door and sidelites on their own. I know they installed it themselves because their old front door and sidelites lay on their front lawn for almost 2 weeks. It was also clear that the wood between the door and sidelites and around the whole door unit was not painted or treated in any way from the manufacturer. My neighbor opted to paint this wood – though I couldn’t vouch for the preparation, quality of paint, or number of coats. They’ll need to maintain the door and painted wood every year as necessary. Not a long-term solution for their front entrance, but it does look better than what was there before.

Here at Penn Windows, Doors & Siding we feel customer service is what sets us apart from other home improvement companies in the Lehigh Valley. It’s not the fact that we have a beautiful showroom that we’re constantly updating with new products, staffed with people who can answer your questions. And it’s not even that Rick Jr. or Rick Sr. come to your home to measure and explain our products in great detail with no pressure to purchase. It’s our 10 Year Workmanship and Service Warranty that gives you peace of mind after installation that really sets us apart.

I just came from a great meeting this morning! Wednesday is my favorite day of the week, and not because my work week is half over! I’m a member of the Bethlehem I chapter of BNI (Business Network International) – and have been for 5 years now. A group of business owners and I meet every Wednesday morning at 7am to pass referrals and network. We educate ourselves on how to best refer our fellow members in an effort to help each other’s businesses grow. BNI’s philosophy is “Givers Gain.” If I give business to you, you will give business to me.
